Former Macy’s Department Store Church St., New Haven, CT
This project included the environmental remediation and demolition of a 330,000 sq.ft., four story, masonry and steel building with a penthouse. This large retail space had been closed and abandoned for years. Water leaks and time took their toll; completely contaminating the interior space with mold and spray on asbestos fireproofing.
The process began with the removal of two pedestrian bridges attached to the adjacent shopping mall to protect the public and reduce traffic encroachments. Making this project quite unusual is the fact that the demolition occurs over active truck tunnels serving the adjacent shopping mall and hotel. Additionally, lateral bracing of the four lane city road is necessary to prevent collapse and to protect the public. We also performed exterior abatement of roofing materials.
