New Haven Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, South Orange St.,
New Haven, CT

Imploding the New Haven Veterans Coliseum was one of the largest revitalization projects that the City of New Haven, CT had undertaken in 30 years.  The scale of this project consisted of two entire city blocks.

The demolition removed the 11,000 seat arena and massive steel tower parking garage. It started with salvage for the owner, asbestos abatement and then the remediation, removal, cleaning and disposal of underground storage tanks.

There was an extensive engineering exercise for the protection of truck tunnels and access ways for neighboring facilities - when the tunnels were beneath the structure being imploded.

Preservation of vital underground utilities was resolved by the construction of a protective bridge and earth berm to absorb the impact.

The post-implosion clean up required the cutting of the steel with one of the world’s largest shears and site restoration.
